The Admissions Team of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has urged prospective applicants to select programmes that align with their academic strengths and long-term career goals.
The advice was given during a career guidance session for students of Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School as part of the university’s ongoing outreach to second-cycle institutions.
Mr. Matthew Amoako, Senior Assistant Registrar at the KNUST Admissions Office, underscored the importance of choosing programmes that reflect students’ capabilities and ambitions.
He said such alignment improves the academic experience and supports future success. He also encouraged students not to be discouraged when offered alternative programmes, noting that these options can still provide meaningful pathways to fulfilling careers.
Mr. Thomas Baakyiirisie, Junior Assistant Registrar at the Admissions Office, took the students through the range of undergraduate programmes offered at KNUST and stressed the importance of strong performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which remains a key factor in admissions.
He also shared the cut-off points for various programmes and urged students, especially those interested in STEM fields, to take advantage of KNUST’s initiatives aimed at reducing the gender gap in science and technology.
Mr. Baakyiirisie cautioned applicants against common errors in the online application process, such as selecting the same programme more than once, saying such mistakes could hurt their chances of admission.
Teachers and administrators of Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School thanked the KNUST team for the guidance and their commitment to supporting student development.
